Windows, Linux, MacOS overview

Operating Systems Overview– to understand the basic concept of Windows, Linux & macOS

This blog is very helpful for the students who are beginners and wants to know the basic knowledge of computer system.

Introduction

Operating System (OS) is the important parts of a computer system. Operating system performs as a bridge between the user (who use the computer) and the computer hardware (physical parts of a computer CPU, RAM, HDD, SSD) etc.

For example : you press the power button, BIOS starts the Operating system, then operating system controls hardware and provide you an interface.

  • You click on google chrome to use
  • Operating system tells the CPU (hardware) to process it
  • Operating system allocate RAM
  • Operating system displays chrome on screen

Main functions of operating system

  • Booting the computer, it ensure that system is working properly
  • Running Applications, it divide CPU and RAM between the applications and insure that they run smoothly.
  • Managing Hardware, it controls all hardware devices.
  • Providing interface to the user, it provide us the interface to control computer.

1.   Windows Operating system

Windows is a popular GUI‑based operating system which is developed by Microsoft.

It is the most commonly used operating system, for home computers, offices, and gaming PC.

Features

  • User-friendly interface: easy to use the graphical interface, working with mouse, icons, windows etc.
  • Maximum software support: Most of the software and programs are easily run in window
  • Best for gaming: it’s the best operating system for gaming platforms
  • Office & study: Most commonly used in offices, schools and homes

Versions

  • Window7
  • Widows 8/8.1
  • Windows 10
  • Windows 11

Every version has new features and better security

Advantages

  • Easy to use
  • Large software and driver support
  • Easy hardware compatibility (printer, USB, etc. getting connected easily)

Disadvantages

  • More chances of virus attacks
  • Paid operating system
  • Less secure compared to Linux OS

2.  Linux operating system

Linux is a free and open‑source operating system. Its source code is publicly available means everyone can see and modify the source code, and use this for free.

It’s a powerful and secure platform mostly used by developers, servers and cyber security professionals.

Important features

  • Open source: Source code are publically available.
  • Highly secure: less risk of viruses and malware
  • Multi-user & multitasking: multiple users run multiple tasks at a same time
  • Mostly command line based: it’s a command line base, but also provide GUI

Distributions (Versions):

  • Ubuntu: friendly for beginners
  • Fedora: for latest technology or updates
  • Debian: Stable or reliable

Uses

  • Kali Linux: for hacking or cyber security
  • Red Hat: for enterprises or businesses
  • Servers: Host websites or Databases
  • Networking: To manage Network systems or servers
  • Cyber Security: Ethical hacking or security testing
  • Developers: for develop Software or apps

Advantages:

  • Free of cost
  • Very secure (Safe from viruses)
  • Fast and secure performance

Disadvantages:

  • Difficult for Beginners (because of typing commands)
  • Limited games & software (games and normal apps are not run like window)

3.  MacOS operating system

MacOS is a proprietary operating system which is developed by Apple. It works only on apple devices. MacOs is a smooth, safe and creative-friendly environment which is perfect for designers and professionals.

Important features

  • Computer run smooth & stable
  •  High security safe from virus & worms
  •   Best for design & multimedia
  •   Unix-based OS, reliable and secure foundation like Linux

Versions

  • macOS Catalina
  • macOS Big Sur
  • macOS Monterey

Each version have new features and improvement

Advantages:

  •   Highly secure (Safe from viruses and vorms)
  •   Smooth performance (Lag-free or fast)
  •   Best for creative work (perfect for Design or multimedia)

Disadvantages:

  •  Very expensive (Price high)
  •  Limited hardware support (only for Apple devices)
  •  Not good for gaming
